A Letter to My New Journal, Sunny
Hey, I think I love you.
Dear Sunny,
Is it ok if I call you Sunny? It’s just that your bright, yellow cover reminds me of the sun and makes me feel warm. Moleskine calls you Citron Yellow, which is cool ‘cause I love lemons. But, Sunny just feels right.
It took me a while to find you. I saw a journal kind of like you at the bookstore, but it had lined pages on the inside. I went home and searched the Internet for one with blank pages, and there you were in all your yellow glory.
I knew you were meant to be mine.✨
We’ve only been together for a couple of weeks now. I know I haven’t done much with you yet, except stare at you in sweet anticipation, and draw flowers and birds on the first page. Please don’t take it personally. The truth is, I think I love you.
Have I been afraid of starting our journey together? Maybe a little, if I’m being honest. Love can be a scary thing, Sunny.
If things are going to work out between us, I’ll need to be vulnerable with you. It’s not always easy to pour my heart out, but you feel like a safe space. And you know what’s better than fear? Faith. I’m ready to commit to you in faith, and see what comes.
Oh my gosh, you’ll never guess where we’re going in a few days. Yosemite! One thing about me is that I love going on adventures. And I’ve never been to Yosemite before, but I hear it’s amazing. Gotta watch out for the bears, though.🐻
It would be cool to see a bear, but not like Leonardo DiCaprio did in The Revenant. Don’t worry, Sunny. We’re gonna keep all our food and such locked up in the bear locker. It’s the noise I’m worried about. Sleeping in a tent while bears roam the campsite looking for snacks, is going to be interesting. It’s all part of the adventure! While we’re not out hiking or outsmarting bears, I’ll make sure to tell you and show you what it’s like.
I wonder what else we’ll go through together?
We have like 235 pages left together. A lot of life can go into 235 pages! As long as I don’t lose you to a bear who mistakes you for lemon pie, you and me are gonna have a lot of fun together. I can just feel it.
Just in these last four pages, I feel like we’ve bonded. We’ve already learned so much about each other. For example, I’ve learned that you rest nicely on my knees as I write. And you’ve learned that I like neon colors, and that I’m not afraid to cross out a sentence when I think it belongs somewhere else.
They say not to edit as you write, but I like to think of it as refinement. Another thing about me is that I write what I like and how I like, like Steve Biko did. There’s no other way, Sunny.
My creativity cannot be defined or put in a box. You’ll see. Some days, I’ll write a stream of words that may not seem to go together. Other days, I’ll write a little haiku. Some days, I’ll write a story or draw a doodle.
Writers need freedom to be ourselves. It’s journals like you that help make it possible. Thanks, Sunny. This is going to be good.
💛 Lindsay
